Former Rep. Ken Andrus Backs Raúl Labrador
I’ll stand with Raúl.
Opinion appeared in the Idaho State Journal by Rep. Ken Andrus
The race for governor in the Republican primary has high stakes candidates.
At the beginning, Tommy Ahlquist said he would spend one dollar more than it took to win. I don’t like the highest office in our state being purchased in that manner. He also said he would cut $100 million of wasteful spending out of the state budget immediately.
Having been in the state Legislature for 12 years, my question is, where would the cuts come from? Education, where teachers’ salaries are already shamefully to low? How about corrections? If judges send people to prison, the state has to feed and house them. Promising to cut $100 million of waste from our state budget, in my mind, is an irresponsible statement. Either the candidate is naïve or has intention to deceive, neither of which is acceptable for someone seeking the office of Governor. He is also distorting facts and figures in order to discredit and vilify the character of his opponents. In my view that is conduct unbecoming of a Christian and I could not trust him with the highest office in our state.
The bill recognizes that the only valid marriage in Idaho is between one man and one woman. Secondly, in 2015, I carried the bill on the House floor to repeal betting on historical horse races in Idaho at three major racing terminals. Not that betting on historical horse racing was illegal, but that the betting machines being used were casino type gambling machines and are expressly prohibited by our state constitution. Disappointingly, Brad voted against the bill. At a political venue this year, Brad Little and Tommy Ahlquist both stated they would veto the repeal of unconstitutional machines. Raul Labrador stated he would uphold our state constitution and repeal the unconstitutional use of these machines.
I sat next to Raul Labrador for two years in the legislative state Affairs Committee. He is a true conservative and not afraid to stand up to the establishment, and to defend the principles he believes in — His record in Congress verifies that. He believes in less government overreach and less government regulation at every level. Raul Labrador is a true defender of our constitution — federal and state. Raul’s wife, Rebecca, was born and raised in the Treasure Valley. Rebecca descended from the Armstrong family who dry farmed in the Rigby-Ririe area. Rebecca is an absolute jewel. As our first lady, Idahoans will love and embrace her.
As a conservative Republican, I support the conservative candidate — Raul Labrador.
Ken Andrus of Lava Hot Springs is a former state lawmaker.
